History : Originally, Solio Ranch Conservancy was a cattle ranch with a focus on rhino conservation. This led in 1970 to the establishment of Solio Ranch as a conservancy. Many reserves around East Africa have received rhinos from Solio Ranch Conservancy. With a black rhino breeding program as well as a large complement of white rhinos,
Entrance Fees & Permits : The entrance fee to Solio Ranch Conservancy is USD 106 per person.
Location : Solio Ranch Conservancy lies approximately 177 km north of Nairobi, nestled in the valley between the Aberdare mountains and Mount Kenya. The nearest town is Nyeri, 38 km away, and Nanyuki 30 km.
Hours of Operation : Solio Ranch Conservancy is open between 6.30h am and 18h pm daily.
Weather & Climate : Generally, the weather is mild due to Solio Ranch Conservancy’s closeness to the equator. Daily temperatures average around 23 ° celcius. The dry season falls between June and September with the short rains falling around October and November. The long rainfalls comes down between March and May. Game viewing is at its best between July and October.
Avoiding Crowds : Consider traveling to Solio Ranch Conservancy between October and February. The rains will cool the days, animal sightings will still be good and there will be availability in nearby accommodations like Glamping-Kenya.

Solio Ranch Conservancy – Nyeri, Laikipia is a privately-owned wildlife conservancy in the Greater Laikipia Region, located between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. The 17,500 acre reserve is filled with acacia forest, traversed by a river center to the conservancy.
Solio Ranch Conservancy plays a major part in the protection and breeding of black rhinos, recognized as one of the most successful in Kenya. The animals live in harmony with other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, buffalo, zebra, and giraffes. The park also offers some of the best leopard viewing in the country and is an ideal place for bird-watching.
Solio Ranch borders the famous Conservancies, Lewa Conservancy and Ol Pejeta conservancy. It’s well situated with great views of the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kenya. It’s the only conservancy in Kenya to Spot Rhinos and Lions in Huge Numbers.
The Solio Ranch Conservancy used to be a working cattle ranch but in 1973 part of it was turned into a wildlife sanctuary. The result: rhinos, pride of lions, and other wildlife came back to the area. Nowadays, it’s a 49,000-acre ranch with 19,000 acres of wildlife sanctuary for black and white rhinos.
