Sweetwaters Chimpansee sanctuary in Ol Pejeta

Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Ol  Pejeta and the largest black rhino conservancy in East Africa.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established with an agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Jane Goodall Institute. The aim – to provide lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. At Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, they get a chance to start over again.

  • The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary Ol Pejeta  provides abused, orphaned and a refuge for rescued shimps who are often psychologically or physically scarred, and this place allows them to live like chimpanzees again in a stress-free environment.
  • Some arrives at the Sweetwater Chumpanzee sanctuary with broken bones or bullets lodged in their bodies, while others are psychologically traumatized  after witnessing the slaughter or capture of some of their family members. You will notice When they arrive at the sanctuary, the shimps lack many of the skills needed to survive in the wild.
  • You also  will notice during your visit at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary that Many of the chimps have picked up human behaviours such as walking, clapping, spitting, or smoking. Some even fear other chimpanzees.
  • After spending the night in the enclosure, this shimps and the others wait to receive their breakfast .All Shimps from the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctyary know theur names, as their names are called, the chimps walk over to their caregivers and hold out their hands to receive their meal of oranges, papayas, and bananas. After taking their breakfast, they take off into their 250-acre jungle reserve.
  •  .The shimps were rescued from South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Cameroon, and Mozambique, and some were brought back to the continent from as far away as Iraq and the United Arab Emirates.

  • Displaced or uprooted from their homelands, these chimpanzee refugees will never return to their native countries.
  • Their habitats are continuously threatened by deforestation due to logging, human settlements and war.
  • Even when their jungle homes appear to be safe, they are in danger of being killed for their meat while their young are captured for trade.

This Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was founded by Jane Goodall

  • The UN estimates that 3,000 chimps die each year while being illegally trafficked to be used as pets, in zoos, or in safari parks.
  • When you will visit this conservancy, you can learn about the different challenges many animals face in the wild, such as poachers, deforestation and diseases. Your entry fee helps the conservancy look after animals, so it’s always worth a visit.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is part of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which looks after all kinds of animals that need care.
