Rhinos have fallen prey to poachers, but there are plenty of lions, leopards and elephants.
Elephants are the most dominant mammal here, numbering about 900 individuals at the latest! And it's possible to get up close to them for the ultimate elephant experience.
You can also spot cheetahs on safari in Samburu National Reserve and Shaba National Reserve, although these big cats are quite rare.

Samburu National Reserve and Shaba Reserve are most famous for their own Big Five:

 

  • Beisa oryx is known for its impressively stretchy neck, with pointed horns and distinctive markings
  • Retuculated Giraffe is known for their rectangular giraffe drawings. They are also much larger than the other giraffes in Africa.
  • Somali ostrich has a feathery delight.
  • Grevy's zebra, for their clever pinstripe pattern;
  •  Gerenuk

 hyenas and even the occasional wild dog can complete your safari in Samburu National reserve.
 The savannah provides grazing for a large number of herbivores, while the river is home to hippos and crocodiles. Other mammals to spot include Grant's gazelle, Kirk's dik-dik, impala, waterbuck, warthog and olive baboon!
When you visit Kenya, a safari in Samburu National Reserve and a safari in Shaba National Reserve should not be missed.
It has been more than 7 years (since 2016) that Shaba and Samburu are believed to be one.
If you do a Safari in Samburu National Reserve, you will notice that the Ewaso Ngiro River flows through the reserve.
 What you may not know yet: During your safari in Samburu National Reserve or your safari in Shaba National Reserve, you will not only meet the Big 5, you will spot different types of animals than in the rest of all Kenyan National Parks.
Spot the long-necked gerenuk antelope balancing on their hind legs to rummage through high branches or the blue-skinned Somali ostrich. Together with the beisa oryx, the reticulated giraffe and the grèvy zebra, all these animals mentioned above can be found nowhere else in Kenya except in Samburu National Reserve and during a safari in Shaba National Reserve.
Leopards prowl the riverine forest and there are also prides of lions on both sides of the river.

 The Shaba National Reserve is also home to over 400 species of birds, including the migratory species that arrive with the short November rains.
